Beijing Alley
Hutongs are narrow streets or alleys,most commonly associated with Beijing,China. In Beijing,hutongs are alleys formed by lines of siheyuan,traditional courtyard residences. Many neighborhoods were formed by joining one siheyuan to another to form a hutong,and then joining one hutong to another. The word hutong is also used to refer to such neighbourhoods.
In old China,streets and lanes were defined by width. Hutongs were lanes no wider than9metres. Many are smaller;Beijing hutongs range in width from10metres down to only40centimetres.
During China's dynastic period,emperors planned the city of Beijingand(连词)arranged the residential areas according to the etiquette systems of the Zhou Dynasty (1027-256BC). At the center was the Forbidden City,surrounded(非谓语动词)in concentric circles by the Inner City and Outer City. Citizens of higher social statuswere permitted(谓语动词被动过去时态)to live closer to the center of the circles. Aristocrats lived to the east and west of the imperial palace. The hutongs they formed were orderly,lined byspacious(形容词,宽敞的)homes and walled gardens. Farther from the palace,and to its north and south,were the commoners,merchants,artisans and laborers. Their siheyuan werefar smallerin scale andsimpler(形容词比较级,前后都有比较级的提示)in design and decoration,and the hutongs werenarrower.
Since the mid -20th century,the number of Beijing hutongs has dropped dramatically as they are demolished to make way for new roads and buildings. More recently,some hutongs have been designated as protected areas in an attempt to preserve this aspect of Chinese cultural history. In Beijing,the hutongs in the vicinity of the Bell Tower and Shichahai Lake are especially well preserved. Some are several hundred years old,and attracts tourists who tour the quarter in pedicabs.
Thanks to Beijing's long history and statusas(介词)capital for six dynasties,almost every hutong has its anecdotes,and some are even associated with historicevents(名词单复数). In contrast to the court life and elite culture represented by the Forbidden City,Summer Palace,and the Temple of Heaven,the hutongs reflectthe(冠词)culture of grassroots Beijingers.

After the introduction,we were pided into small groups and set out to explore the school grounds to find and identify different plants. We were provided with identification guides and the assistance of student council members who were knowledgeable about plants.
2. During the event,we had a guest speaker who gave a presentation on different types of plants and their various uses. We also had a plant identification quiz,where participants had to identify different plants based on their characteristics. One of the highlights of the event was a plant-themed craft activity,where we made our own mini-gardens using recycled materials. It was a fun and creative way to learn about plants and how to take care of them.
3. During the activity,we were given a guided tour by one of the garden’s staff members,who taught us about the different types of plants and their uses. We also had the opportunity to get hands-on experience by planting seeds and tending to the garden.
